Most landscapers or contractors will advise using herbicides to get rid of weeds or an old lawn. They will tell you to spray the entire area, or the whole yard with whatever particular herbicide they recommend. The easiest to use, most common to find in the stores, and one of the safest herbicides are the ones with the active ingredient glyphosate. Different brands, such as Roundup and Kleenup. are brands you can trust.
If you go to Lowes or Home Depot, all you have to do is ask a sales associate which one they recommend. Just tell them that you are looking for a herbicide with active ingredient glyphosate. They will know what you are talking about and point out whichever is the best choice they offer. Just to be sure, read the label and make sure that it does have glyphosate as the active ingredient.

Be prepared to apply whichever herbicide that you get at least 2 to 3 times in your yard, before expecting results. They can or box that you buy will probably say that you can kill all the weeds in just one use. This can happen, but most of the time it does take two or three times to get rid of all the weeds. You have to remember, weeds have deep roots and are very stubborn. Glyphosate works best there in the summertime or the warmer weather.
If you have a large lawn, you will need to rent or buy a sprayer do the job. If you do get a sprayer, make sure the herbicide you get comes in a concentrated form. You will mix this with water in order to use it.
You will make sure that you need to keep your kids and pets away from the yard. And herbicide is very dangerous for kids or children to be around. Pets have often gotten a hold of bad chemicals and had to go to the hospital or have ended up dead. Make sure you take proper precautions before starting the project.
