Build a Lean-To Shed

If you have found yourself short on storage space and looking for ways to improve this, you're not alone. It doesn't take long to fill up the attic, garage, or spare room with things that you may not want to throw away, but simply have limited space to keep these items in.

I found myself in a similar dilemma when it came to storing firewood. We were trying to use an old outbuilding to store it all, but it was simply too small to hold all the wood we needed for the winter. We also found that we wanted to use the shed for storing other things too, such as bikes, boxes, mowers, rakes etc. - so before long, the shed was cluttered with wood and a whole bunch of other things...it was time for more space.

We decided that we either needed to build or buy a new shed. After searching for sheds and shed plans on the internet and in the library, we became overwhelmed with the large selection of choices available to us.

We finally decided that one of the most affordable solutions was to build a lean to shed. Since a lean to is open on one entire side, it is (in my opinion) cheaper and easier to build than a conventional shed. I also liked the lean to design since it works well as a wood shed. Wood sheds need plenty of ventilation so the wood stored in it can season and dry out, but still stay out of the rain and snow.

Lean to sheds can be built against the side of an existing building or can be free standing. There are many different purposes for a lean to shed too, and their designs may all look slightly different, depending on what you're using them for. There are garden lean to sheds, loafing sheds, run in sheds, lean to potting sheds, Livestock sheds, lean to wood shed, to name a few of the more common ones. For the purposes of this article, I'm not focusing on all the differences among these lean to shed styles. A quick online search or trip to the library or book store should provide you with an abundance of information.

I also discovered that lean to shed kits can be purchased online. And, of course, your local box store such as Sears, Home Depot, Lowes etc. also have a wide selection of lean to or other simple storage sheds. But to save money, you may want to consider building one yourself.

I found a few free lean to shed plans online, but VERY few of them. However, I was encouraged that there were many shed plans that could be purchased online at a reasonable price. For my purposes, I was simply building a lean to for storing wood and wasn't as concerned about how it would look and simply wanted to cut costs where I could. So I didn't purchase or order any lean to plans online. If you are interested in doing this, however, the plans generally range in price from .00 to .00. Many of them are very user friendly too, and can usually be downloaded as soon as you buy them. I found a nice picture of a lean to wood shed I liked, and developed my own building plan for it. I'm no contractor, though, so I really took my time when constructing it.

I found that, with the money I saved in doing the work myself, I could build 2 lean to sheds for what it would cost to buy a shed from the local stores...so I did! I built one lean to against an outbuilding, and another free standing one close to our house. We have a few goats, so one of them is used as shelter for our goats and the other for storing firewood.

We have been happy with the extra storage and I'm glad we put in the hard work of building them. I highly recommend building your own, if you're up to the task. I'm not overly skilled in construction, but this is a project the joe-average homeowner can take on with the right amount of planning and preparation. The sheds can be big or small, depending on your needs. And I'm sure you'll appreciate the extra space they'll give you. Good Luck!

Polishing Granite

Of all the natural stones that you can choose for flooring granite is by far the hardest material and the most hardwearing. It is also resistant to staining and acid and alkaline chemicals. This is the reason it is the kitchen worktop of choice and the flooring material of choice.

Despite its hardness it is still capable of being scratched by quartz. Quartz is sand like material which makes up the biggest proportion of dirt brought into a building on the underside of footwear. Traffic going over this then moves the small particles of sand over the surface of the granite causing minute scratches. The scratching effect on granite will be much less than that on marble for instance but non-the-less it still scratches.
This effect can be minimized by the correct maintenance programme. A typical maintenance programme for granite flooring would be to dust mop the floor each day to remove these particles of dirt and once or twice a week depending upon traffic wash the floor with stone soap. This reseals the floor and enhances the colour. This is then wet vacuumed up and the floor then washed with pure water which is also wet vacuumed up. This wet vacuuming prevents the possibility of water staining.

Once per week or once every other week, again depending upon traffic the floor is misted with a crystallising agent and buffed at high speed. This removes the minute scratches and restores the shine to a floor which may be dulling very slightly in areas of high traffic. Then once per year it can be shined using a more abrasive crystallising compound and a slow speed buffer with non-rusting steel wool pads.

If this regime is followed then the shine on the granite floor should last for as long as you require it.

If the floor becomes neglected and is not cleaned correctly then it will slowly become dull and the scratching will build up enhancing the dull effect. If this was a marble floor then the scratching would be greater and could be removed and the shine restored by using diamond grinders on a slow speed buffing machine. However successful re-grinding of granite cannot be achieved. It can be re-ground using the diamond technique and made shiny but quite often it causes a colour change in the granite which is obviously not acceptable to the customer.

This regrinding process which for marble might take about 30 minutes per square meter for granite, being much harder takes about two to three hours to achieve any sort of shine.

In the processing plants marble is ground for about 40 minutes to achieve the high gloss effect. Granite on the other hand will be ground for several hours to achieve the same effect. There is no way that once the granite is in place this process can be replicated.

Consequently if you have a granite floor and it dulls and somebody offers to restore the shine by re-grinding it do not bother. You will end up with a floor that may be shiny but has probably changed colour and it will have cost you a small fortune. Take care of it from the outset and you will never be in this position.

Garage door springs support the entire weight of the door. The springs are wound or stretched under pressure, tightening and loosening as you open and close the door. It's the door springs and not just the door opener that supports and lifts 300 plus pounds of weight of the door.. Like anything else under pressure, eventually your springs WILL break. So in the event that you find yourself int his little predicament, what do you do?

Here's my recommended "4- Step Process for Repairing Your Garage Door Springs:

Step 1 - Get Your Car Out of The Garage

You must be saying to yourself, "If I could get my car out of the garage, I wouldn't have a problem". If you're saying this, you're naturally speaking from frustration. The best way to get through a situation like this is to keep yourself level-headed and look for quick solutions that will allow you to continue your normal way of living without being interrupted by this common event. Just because your garage door springs have busted, doesn't mean that you don't have use of the garage door. It is still on track with its rollers and can be manually operated.

Pull the red emergency release cord located above the door to enable you to manually lift the door. Remember that the garage door is a heavy object, and even heavier without the support of the spring which would normally neutralize the weight. If it's too heavy to lift yourself, have someone else help you. If you accidentally drop the door while you are manually lifting, DO NOT try and stop it with your foot. Dropping a 300 pound door on your foot or any other body part is bound to ruin your day.

Step 2 - Identify Your Spring

Identify which type of spring you have: Extension or Torsion. Torsion and Extension springs exert a force equal to the weight of your garage door. This counter balances the 200 to 300 pound door, rendering it weight neutral so it can easily be opened.

A Torsion spring runs across a bar at the top of the inside of the door. The spring is wound and under immense tension. It's the tension of torsion spring that lifts the weight of the garage door.

Extension springs are found on either side of the door. These springs act like big steel rubber bands, stretching as the door is lowered.

Step 3 - Buy New Springs

Now that you know what type of spring you have, you need to purchase new ones. You'll want to replace all of your garage door springs at the same time. Having undergone similar aging and weathering, one broken garage door spring is a sign that the second one is about to break soon. There's no logical reason to fix one spring at a time and just wait for the other one to break, unless you enjoy the headaches and hassles.

Also, having one old spring and one new spring will throw off the balance of your garage door. You 'll also burn out the motor on your garage door opener and have even more problems. You can find and purchase new garage door springs at your local hardware store, such as Home Depot or Lowes. Prices will vary depending on the type of spring size, quality, coating and cycles.

Size - You'll need to measure your existing spring to know exactly what size replacement you'll need. There are 4 accurate measures you're going to need: (1) Wind Direction (2)Wire Size (3) Diameter - Torsion springs measure inside diameter and extension springs measure outside diameter (4) The Overall Length of the Spring.

Coating - Is it galvanized, powder coated or oil tempered? Which is going to resist rust the longest?

Step 4 - Installation

Installing your new garage door springs is not only a lengthy and complicated process, but potentially dangerous. You have got to remember that the garage door springs are wound up with more tension than Steve Carell as the 40-Year Old Virgin. The slightest mistake or mis-calibration could be a deadly one.

9 times out of 10, homeowners will find the task of repairing or replacing garage door springs too complicated, if not too dangerous. Most people don't have the time or inclination to replace or repair the broken spring themselves. If that sounds like you, your best option would be to contact a professional technician. It will also save you the time in measuring and shopping for the right springs.

Home Security - Are Your Home's Doors Break-in Proof?

Home security is fast becoming an important topic of concern here in America. As the economy worsens, the crime rate for burglaries and robberies is rising. The local news has stories almost daily of break-ins at homes and business in which the predominant method of entry is kicking in one of the exterior doors.

Over the years I have spent as an insurance adjuster, I've been to at least a hundred homes to investigate burglaries and help the homeowners prepare their insurance claim. Seldom have I found incidents where the burglar came in through a window. Burglars nearly always make their entry through a door.

Most people use deadbolt locks and their first line of defense. Nothing wrong with that. I've never seen a deadbolt lock fail. The deadbolt is not the weakest link in the chain when it comes to securing an exterior door.

The weak link is the door jamb.

For you that are unfamiliar with the term "jamb," it is the frame to which the door is mounted by hinges. When you turn the key the deadbolt lock throws a steel bolt into a latch on the jamb.

For tens of millions of homes, apartments and businesses, the exterior door jamb is made of wood. In residential applications, the door jamb usually has a thickness of ¾". Sometimes exterior door jambs can have a 1 ½" thickness.

The screws that mount the latchplate onto the jamb are usually ¾" wood screws, and are usually about 1" away from the edge of the jamb. So, when a bad guy kicks your door, there is only about 1" of wood in the jamb offering any resistance. One inch of pine wood, or even oak, does not give you much protection.

In almost every burglary claim I've handled where the burglar came in through a door, it was the wood door jamb that failed...usually on about the second kick. And the cost of replacing a damaged door and jamb can easily run 0 - ,000.

The best solution to securing your exterior doors against break-in would be to install steel jambs and steel doors. However, that can be very expensive.

Sliding glass doors are also an easy entry point for thieves. Placing a dowel, bar or stick in the track does not prevent your door from being lifted out of the track.

Although my career title is Instructional Designer, designing documents and training, on screen and off, is not my only passion. I truly love to design rooms, homes, patios, etc... I'm not a "follower" so to speak of Feng Shui but I do believe they are on the right track when they speak of keeping each room in your home free of clutter. I do believe each room should have a theme that is followed throughout. Take a week or two to view the room with no elements and come up with a plan on paper first. The best compromise is to attach your stringers together first and put only a few stairs treads on before attaching the stairs to the deck. Make sure to use strong hardware such as lag screws or hex bolts when attaching your deck stairs as the consequences of failing steps can be disastrous (hopefully this is obvious).
