Historic Flags - Outdoor Nylon Or Light Weight Polyester?

Most flags that you will see flying from flag poles today are usually produced from nylon or polyester. Dependent on the (weather) conditions of your area, nylon could be referred to by your flagpole supplier as "outdoor nylon" and polyester as "light weight polyester." Flags or banners (pretty much the same thing), such as historic flags, have been flown for decades if not centuries, as a means to signal or identify.

Seasons ago, the very first (outdoor) banners were flown on battlefields, as militaries marched into battles. According to historians, the first use of flags spreads from China and India, south-eastern Asia, where they are claimed to be invented. Over the many years, outdoor- and indoor flags have developed into practical tools for signaling and identifying purposes, outdoor banners especially in situations and environments where communication was more challenging, such as open seas.

A distinction between indoor and outdoor flags can be made based on the material alone. Indoor flags are produced from light weight polyester where outdoor banners are produced from nylon. Polyester is often used in apparel settings and other environments that require furnishing.

Polyester is known for some of its advantages over other more natural fabrics, such as its resistance with regards to wrinkles. Some choose to produce products that have a good blend of the two, in other words, polyester fibers are spun together with natural fibers, which (however) is usually not applied for the production of flags.

Polyester in our day is also used for production of other products such as: bottles, films, boats, auto-parts (filters) and wire.

Considering flags specifically, polyester is applied for the production of United States or American flags, state-, military-, international- and historic flags in various sizes. Also, custom banners often times will be produced in light weight polyester. Generally, light weight polyester flags are somewhat cheaper than outdoor nylon flags.
